Based in Tokyo, Esteban Haga is a filmmaker and photographer exploring people, places, culture, and the spaces between reality and imagination.
His visual language was shaped by his early studies in film and a fascination with surrealism, non-narrative cinema, and experimental image-making. Later, studying photography in New York expanded his perspective, allowing him to explore the relationship between moving and still images, atmosphere, and visual expression.
His work draws from influences across Japan, Europe, and North America, combining cinematic observation with a sensitivity to composition, light, and the unexpected.
His practice moves freely between film and photography, documentary and experimental work, with a particular interest in contemporary Japan, its people, landscapes, traditions, and evolving culture.
